I painted this from a photograph taken by Aulo Gelli in Tobago because I loved its composition and the sense of balance between the positive and negative space. Since the photograph was taken in a rainforest with tall trees blocking out the natural sunlight using an old 35mm point and shoot camera, the image ended up looking a little duller than I would have liked it to. Now, Tobago itself is a beautiful island filled with natural space, sandy beaches, mountainous rainforests, and several beautiful waterfalls, so I simply could not bring myself to depict it in dull colour. What I love most about the process of painting is that I don’t have to. So, I decided to give it more vibrancy and happiness. That is Tobago.
