Tomatoes

2019

    • Still Life
    • Oil on Canvas, 11" x 14"

As much as I admire still life works of other artists, the idea of painting inanimate objects is quite challenging for me. I am generally drawn to creating art which is expressive and gestural, and I have yet to find the inspiration to do this with…say bunch of grapes. For this reason, this painting of tomatoes is probably one of my greatest achievements. It was completed as part of a workshop with one of my favorite teachers, Gonzalo Ruiz Navarro who also took the photograph. I was inspired by the idea of having fun mixing different values of red. Red has been my favourite colour for as long as I can remember. In fact, one of my first memories of conscious thought was as a pre-schooler falling in love with red and deciding that every painting I made had to have red in it. This painting represents my childhood dream.
